A remand prisoner accused of murdering his wife was found dead inside Kannur Central Jail in Kerala on Tuesday. The prisoner, Jilson from Kenichira in Wayanad, reportedly slit his throat using a knife taken from the prison kitchen late Monday night. He had been held for seven months in connection with his wife’s murder. Fellow inmates noticed bloodstains on Tuesday morning and alerted prison authorities. Jilson was taken alive to the district hospital but died shortly after arrival. Jilson, a Kerala Water Authority employee, had earlier attempted suicide reportedly due to debts. Prison officials had arranged counselling as he showed ongoing suicidal tendencies. The Kannur town police have registered a case of unnatural death and begun an investigation. Security lapse allegations have surfaced following the tragic incident. Police conducted an inquest and shifted the body to the mortuary.
