The Supreme Court committee, headed by retired judge Ajay Rastogi, started its three-day visit to Karur on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. Their aim is to oversee the ongoing CBI investigation into the September 27 stampede at Velusamypuram. The tragic event killed 41 people and injured many during a political rally held by actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay. Judge Rastogi was joined by senior IPS officers Sonal Mishra and Sumit Saran. They arrived at the Public Works Department Guest House, now the temporary CBI office, around 10 a.m. The visit follows a Supreme Court order that stopped the earlier SIT probe led by Inspector General of Police Asra Garg and shifted the case to the CBI under this committee’s supervision. More than 15 CBI officers, led by Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Praveen Kumar, have been working in Karur for several days. They are reviewing crowd movement videos, witness statements, and surveillance footage. Judge Rastogi and the team held a detailed review meeting with the CBI officials. On Monday, December 1, CBI Deputy Inspector General Atul Kumar Thakur visited the stampede site after discussing the case at the guest house. Over the next two days, the committee will meet families of the victims and injured to record their grievances. People and political party representatives may also submit petitions about failures in crowd control, event planning, and emergency response. These will be included in the fact-finding process. Karur District Collector M. Thangavel and RDO Mohammed Faizal welcomed the committee. They briefed members on the district’s administrative actions, including compensation and new safety measures since the tragedy. Police said Judge Rastogi will stay in Karur until December 4 before going to Coimbatore to catch his return flight.
