On December 2, 2025, Madhya Pradesh's Higher Education Department issued a show-cause notice to Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Bhopal's chancellor. The notice follows a violent protest on November 25 by about 4,000 students at the VIT campus in Sehore district. Students protested over poor food quality, unsafe water, and a jaundice outbreak affecting 35 students from November 14 to 24. The department acted after a three-member panel reported that the campus is run like a "fort" with a dictatorial management style. The management ignored complaints about food and water quality and mishandled students who raised concerns. According to the report, students faced threats like seizure of ID cards and exam issues if they spoke up. The notice, issued under the Madhya Pradesh Private University Act, demands an explanation within seven days. Failure to respond may lead to government takeover of the institute's administration. The report also found the management did not properly maintain records of the jaundice cases and did not conduct microbiological audits of drinking water. Instead of treating sick students, they were asked to leave. The warden and guards reportedly manhandled students, triggering the violent protests where property and vehicles were damaged. The panel noted that key decisions lie with a few officials while others play ornamental roles. The management showed a non-cooperative and prejudiced attitude towards the inquiry. VIT's registrar confirmed receiving the notice and promised a reply to the government. This calm but firm action by Madhya Pradesh authorities aims to hold VIT accountable for lapses affecting nearly 15,000 students on campus.
