Bhodu Sheikh hopes to see his daughter Sunali Khatun, her husband Danish Sheikh, and their eight-year-old son back in India soon. They were pushed into Bangladesh earlier this year. The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to consider allowing them entry on “humanitarian grounds.” “She is nine months pregnant and due to deliver her third child. So, until I see her walk through the door of my house, I will not be relieved,” Mr. Bhodu Sheikh said from his home in Birbhum, West Bengal. He added, “The government should take corrective action and bring her back. What will be the nationality of my grandchild if they are born in another country?” The family was deported on June 27, 2025, after being picked up by Delhi police on June 18, 2025, accused of being illegal Bangladeshi citizens. The Calcutta High Court called the deportation “illegal” on September 26, 2025, and ordered their return within a month. On December 1, 2025, the Supreme Court heard the Centre’s appeal against this order. It asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to consider allowing Ms. Sunali Khatun and her son to return. Mr. Bhodu Sheikh also wants his son-in-law allowed back. The matter will be heard again on December 3, 2025. Trinamool Congress MP Samirul Islam said Sunali and her family received bail on December 1, 2025. “They have been placed in safe custody, where they are awaiting repatriation,” he said. Sunali’s sister, Roshni Khatun, said, “There’s no one to take care of her. How will Sunali manage if she’s not brought back before the delivery?” She is currently caring for her niece in Delhi.
