Supreme Court to Continue Bail Hearings for Umar Khalid in Delhi Riots Case
December 3, 2025
The Supreme Court on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, will continue hearing bail pleas of Umar Khalid and others in the 2020 Delhi riots 'larger conspiracy' case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Bench led by Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria is expected to hear rejoinder submissions from the accused's side. On Tuesday, activists Gulfisha Fatima, Umar Khalid, and Sharjeel Imam told the Court that the Delhi Police's claim of a coordinated 'regime change operation' behind the February 2020 Delhi riots is not mentioned in the chargesheet. They pointed out that this alleged 'regime change operation' is now being projected as central to the prosecution’s case despite its absence in official documents. The accused, including Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohammad Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed, have challenged the Delhi High Court’s September 2 order denying them bail. The High Court had called their roles 'grave' and said evidence suggested a coordinated plan behind the riots, which resulted in 53 deaths and hundreds injured in the national capital.
