Union Government Agrees to Bring Back Pregnant Woman and Son Deported to Bangladesh on Humanitarian Grounds
December 3, 2025
On December 3, 2025, the Union Government agreed to bring back a pregnant woman, Sonali Khatoon, and her 8-year-old son, who were deported to Bangladesh. This decision came after the Supreme Court intervened on humanitarian grounds. A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi accepted the government's promise to provide free medical care and daily support for both mother and child.
The case began after the Calcutta High Court ordered their return in September, following a petition from Sonali's father, Bhodu Sekh. He claimed his family was originally from West Bengal but had moved to Delhi for work. The mother and son were deported on June 26 during an identity verification drive initiated by the Home Ministry. The government said they lacked proper proof of Indian citizenship.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court the government would bring them back only on humanitarian grounds and did not want to set a precedent affecting the deportation case. Justice Bagchi suggested checking if Mr. Sekh was an Indian citizen, as that could impact the son's and daughter's citizenship status. The court will hear the case again on December 10.
