Israel Receives Coffin from Gaza Said to Contain Hostage's Body
December 3, 2025
Israel has received a coffin through the Red Cross that Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) say contains the body of one of the last two deceased hostages still in Gaza, the Israeli prime minister's office confirmed. Israeli forces will now send the bodies to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification. Earlier, PIJ's military wing said it found a hostage's body in northern Gaza. This handover happened after tests showed that a previous set of remains from Hamas did not belong to either of the two dead hostages. The two men are Ran Gvili, a 24-year-old Israeli police officer, and Suthisak Rintalak, a 43-year-old Thai agricultural worker. Both were killed during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, with their bodies taken to Gaza. Under a US-brokered ceasefire from 10 October, Hamas had agreed to return 20 living Israeli hostages and 28 bodies of dead hostages within 72 hours. All living hostages were freed on 13 October in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza. So far, 23 dead Israeli hostages’ remains and those of three foreign hostages have been returned. In return, Israel handed over bodies of 345 Palestinians killed during the conflict. Israel accuses Hamas of delaying the hostages' body recoveries, while Hamas claims it struggles to find them under rubble. These delays have stalled progress on the second phase of peace plans. The two dead hostages left in Gaza were among 251 people abducted by Hamas and its allies on 7 October 2023, when about 1,200 others were killed. Israel’s military response in Gaza has resulted in more than 70,100 deaths, per the Hamas-run health ministry.
