December 3, 2025
India's President Droupadi Murmu called for open, stable, and rules-based oceans during a Navy Day event on December 3, 2025. Speaking at the Indian Navy's Operational Demonstration at Shanghumughom beachfront, she pointed out the crucial role of the Indian Ocean Region in global trade and energy supply. "We are committed to the idea of the oceans remaining open, stable and rules-based," Ms. Murmu said, adding that India promotes collaboration through shared awareness and peaceful use of seas under the vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.' The Navy's role stretches beyond defense to deterring threats, combating piracy, securing the Exclusive Economic Zone, and ensuring freedom of navigation. President Murmu also emphasized the Navy's vital part in advancing the Blue Economy for sustainable development. "By securing sea routes, protecting marine resources, preventing illegal activities, and supporting maritime research, the Navy strengthens our vision of safe, prosperous, and sustainable oceans," she stated. She stressed self-reliance, urging the Navy to modernize and adopt new technologies, saying, "Self-reliance strengthens national security. It also creates employment and sets in motion technological innovation." The three-hour demonstration featured multiple naval assets like INS Vikrant, destroyers, submarines, sailships, fighter aircraft, and special forces MARCOS. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi described the Navy as a combat-ready, future-ready force crucial for India's maritime interests and development. The event was attended by dignitaries including Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Minister Suresh Gopi. President Murmu received a 21-gun salute and inspected a Guard of Honour on arriving at the IAF Forward Base Support Unit.
