Cyclone Ditwah Rains Damage Chennai Roads, Potholes Trouble Motorists
December 3, 2025
Several major roads in Chennai, including Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai, Medavakkam - Sholinganallur Road, and Arcot Road, were badly affected by five days of rain from cyclone Ditwah and related weather systems. The damage has caused traffic delays and frustration for drivers due to potholes appearing on roads that were recently repaired.
Vijay Karthick from Perumbakkam said, "I was thinking that the road was being repaired only to be torn asunder by rains soon and that has come true now. I am avoiding taking OMR and instead traveling via ECR, which surprisingly, has no sign of any damage despite the rains." He added that parts of OMR showed waterlogging and road material had come undone near Dollar Biscuit junction by Sholinganallur.
Harsha Koda, co-founder of FOMRRA, commented, "OMR is in shambles, battered with water stagnation everywhere, and entire stretches barely passable. Every time I hear about another grand government project, I can’t help but wonder whether that money would be better spent repairing and maintaining the infrastructure we already have instead of pouring it into new flyovers, bridges, convention centers, or sports arenas. OMR was envisioned about 25 years ago and has been operational for nearly two decades, yet the construction quality feels so poor that even a normal monsoon, not a cyclone, can bring it to its knees."
The Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai stretches connecting OMR and ECR also suffer from damage. Parts of Medavakkam - Sholinganallur Road have large potholes formed where old and new road sections separate. A retired engineer noted that heavy vehicles speeding through these damaged patches make the situation worse. On Arcot Road, newer re-laid sections have fared worse than older parts.
Engineers from the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company, responsible for OMR maintenance, stated that about four kilometers of recently re-laid road have not been badly damaged. They noted that some recent work by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is damaged because the final two layers of road were not yet laid. A source said, "Those were only temporary works meant to make the road motorable. After a day’s sunlight, repairs will be taken up."
The citizens and officials now watch for swift repairs amid continuing rains to ease traffic woes on these busy city roads.
