The Emergency, declared by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975, was condemned by Modi as an act that placed democracy 'under arrest'. The commemoration of the Emergency anniversary as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by the Modi government signifies the importance of preserving democracy and upholding the Constitution's ideals. Modi honored all individuals who fought against the Emergency, emphasizing their role in reinstating democracy and leading to fresh elections that resulted in Congress's defeat.
