US Renames Institute of Peace as Donald J Trump Institute Ahead of Major Africa Peace Deal
December 4, 2025
On Wednesday, the US State Department announced that the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) building in Washington, DC, has been renamed the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace. This is the first time the institute is rededicated under a sitting president’s name. The department posted on X, “This morning, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation's history. Welcome to the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported the move, tweeting, “President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace. It's time our State Department display that.” The renamed sign was placed outside the institute on the same day.
The change comes ahead of the expected signing of a US-brokered peace agreement between the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to be held at the newly named building. The deal aims to ease tensions after months of violence in eastern Congo involving the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly defended the renaming, stating, “Now, the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace, which is both beautifully and aptly named after a president who ended eight wars in less than a year, will stand as a powerful reminder of what strong leadership can accomplish for global stability. Congratulations, world!” This claim about ending eight wars remains disputed, as conflicts like the Israel-Hamas war continue.
This move has revived calls and scrutiny over the Trump administration’s past efforts to control the USIP. The administration had previously removed the institute’s board and replaced staff, but a federal judge called the move unlawful and a “gross usurpation of power.” Since then, the USIP has operated in a limited way and has not commented on the renaming.
The peace pact is seen as an important step to calm escalating violence in the region and highlights what the current administration calls President Trump’s growing diplomatic legacy.
