Australia’s First Indoor Ski Resort Backed by China’s BonSki Group, Opening in 2028
December 4, 2025
A $700 million project to build Australia’s first indoor ski resort in Penrith, western Sydney, has won a big partner. Winter Sports World’s managing director Peter Magnisalis signed a deal with China’s BonSki Group, the world’s biggest indoor ski operator, in Guangzhou on Thursday. The resort will feature a 300-metre Olympic-class ski slope, a 200-room 4.5-star hotel, and restaurants. ‘‘We’ve got the Opera House, we’ve got the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and soon we’re going to have Winter Sports World,’’ Magnisalis said. Construction should start in a few months, with a planned opening in 2028. BonSki, known for its huge resorts in China including Huafa Snow World in Shenzhen, will provide expertise once the resort opens. The project, after 10 years of approvals, was given significant development status by New South Wales government in late 2024. The ski slope will use chemical-free snow made from only air and water. Around half of all Australians have never seen snow, so the resort will offer a large snow play area and learn-to-ski and snowboard programs. It will also allow training at Olympic levels. Winter Sports World expects 1.5 million visitors yearly, including international tourists. The resort is near the local favourite Penrith beach, nicknamed Pondi. The project is predicted to create 2,700 jobs in western Sydney. Funding will come from a mix of domestic and international investors, Magnisalis said.
