Aster Ramesh Hospitals Performs Awake Heart Bypass Surgery on Critical Patient
December 5, 2025
Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Vijayawada successfully performed Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) on a 76-year-old patient with Myasthenia Gravis (MG). The patient stayed fully awake during the surgery, which is rare in such cases. The patient had triple vessel disease, with severe blockages in all three main coronary arteries, and a disease weakening respiratory muscles. General anaesthesia posed high risks. The medical team chose the awake bypass technique. In this method, the patient remains conscious and breathes independently. The doctors used thoracic epidural anaesthesia to numb only the chest area. This avoided the need for a ventilator. The surgery went smoothly, and the patient is recovering well. Dr. Pothineni Ramesh Babu, Managing Director of Aster Ramesh Hospitals, praised the medical team’s efforts. The operation took place as reported in the hospital’s press release on Thursday, December 04, 2025.
