December 5, 2025
Dr. Vinod Kumar, Director at IN-SPACe, Department of Space, spoke to The Hindu about new space policies from Indian States and their benefits. Karnataka recently launched its space policy, marking a big step for India’s space scene. "The Karnataka Space Policy is a welcome step," Kumar said. He added it shows confidence and maturity in India's space ecosystem. Earlier this year, IN-SPACe joined hands with Karnataka for a Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and a space manufacturing park to boost satellite and launch vehicle production. Other States like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh have also created their own space policies. Kumar says this shows space is now a key sector across India. He shared, "A healthy spirit of collaboration and competition among States will ultimately accelerate innovation, and help India build a strong and diversified space industry." Most States consulted IN-SPACe while drafting their policies. Kumar explained, "Our role has been to guide and support States so their policies are inclusive, industry-friendly and aligned with the overall national vision for the space sector." This new wave of State policies is set to strengthen India's position in the global space arena.
