West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal has instructed booth-level officers (BLOs) involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists to double-check all forms and remove names of deceased, absent, or duplicate voters before the first phase ends on December 11. The deadline for this phase was extended from December 4 to 11. In a message on December 4, Mr. Agarwal said BLOs must take "utmost care" when uploading data. "You must ensure every single dead/absent/duplicate voter’s name is deleted from the voter list as the Election Commission aims to keep every eligible voter’s name and delete every ineligible one. There should not be any mistake, inadvertently or otherwise,” he warned. He added that any "intentional mistake" found will lead to legal action. An official from the CEO’s office revealed that only seven polling booths now report no dead or shifted voters in the past year. This is a sharp fall from 2,208 booths reported earlier and 480 just two days ago, after a strict re-check was ordered. Mr. Agarwal reminded BLOs they are on deputation to the Election Commission of India for this important work and thanked those who have performed well, stating, "no word is enough to praise them." However, the CEO’s statement did not mention claims by the BLO Oikyo Manch about the deaths of four BLOs due to stress and pressure during the SIR process. A deputy CEO said district officers have been asked to report on these deaths and verify their causes. The active and careful revision aims to ensure voter lists in West Bengal are accurate and eligible voters are correctly included.
