Dozens Detained in New Orleans Amid Trump’s Federal Immigration Raids and Protests
December 5, 2025
Dozens of people were detained in New Orleans as the Trump administration’s big immigration sweep hit its second day. The raid led to protests, fear, and claims of racial profiling. Immigrant families hid while arrests happened across the city—in parking lots, on streets, bus stops, and outside major stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Rachel Taber of Unión Migrante shared a video showing masked border patrol agents questioning and handcuffing a man in a Lowe’s parking lot. When asked where he was born, the man said, “I’m a US citizen.” The agent repeated the question, then ordered him handcuffed. Taber said at least three US citizens were wrongly detained but later freed after proving their status.
CNN reported a 22-year-old US-born mother saying agents chased her home from a grocery store. She shouted, “I’m legal! I’m a US-born citizen! Please, leave me alone!”
Taber said, “They’re picking up people off the streets, whoever they can catch – these are moms and dads coming home from work.” She called the raids “psychological warfare” and accused agents of racial profiling based on skin color.
The Department of Homeland Security said only “dozens” were detained in “Operation Catahoula Crunch,” naming six cases. One person had vehicle theft and forging documents charges. The administration claims it targets “the worst of the worst.”
The raids triggered strong community response. Emergency rides were arranged for children whose parents fear leaving home. New Orleans city council meetings were interrupted as protesters demanded ICE-free city properties. Protesters’ chants of “let the people speak” followed the suspension of public comments, leading to police removing them.
Local businesses saw fewer customers. Many residents stayed indoors to avoid agents. Taber called it a “siege,” saying families face hard choices about work, school, and rent. “There are kids this Christmas who are not just going to be without presents, they’re going to be without parents,” she said.
