Eco-Friendly Straws Made from Fallen Coconut Leaves

A walk at Bengaluru’s Christ University sparked an idea in Professor Saji Varghese to turn fallen coconut leaves into biodegradable straws. Founded in 2020, Sunbird Straws now produces 7 lakh eco-friendly straws a month with a team of 115 women across South India. The leaves' natural wax makes them water-resistant and anti-fungal, perfect for use as drinking straws. Sunbird Straws also produces straws from pandanus and pineapple leaves, further expanding their sustainable product range.
