Karnataka urged to form Sannati Development Authority and boost Buddhist heritage tourism
December 5, 2025
The Karnataka Boudha Sahitya Mattu Sanskrutika Parishat has urged the state government to set up the Sannati Development Authority during the upcoming Belagavi Assembly session. On Friday, Suresh Kanekar, the Parishat's founder president, spoke in Kalaburagi city demanding a research centre at Sannati and special funds for developing nine major Buddhist sites into international tourist destinations.
Kanekar highlighted the significance of Kanaganahalli and Sannati in Chittapur taluk. He said, "Rare findings from the 1st and 3rd century Satavahana period, including stone carvings showing Emperor Ashoka and inscriptions in Pali, Brahmi, Prakrit and Devanagari, make the site unique."
Though a museum, library, guest house, staff quarters, and landscaped gardens have been built at Sannati after large spending, these remain unused due to lack of maintenance, he added. Kanekar urged the government to "immediately take over the buildings and open them to the public."
He also demanded shifting major Buddhist artifacts from the Kalaburagi museum and other places to the Sannati museum.
Kanekar noted that the government issued an order to set up the authority in March 2024 but has not yet created it. He said, "While development authorities like Kaginele and Basavakalyan have received adequate funds and made good progress, Sannati continues to be ignored."
He urged the state government to decide in the upcoming session to form the Sannati Development Authority, allocate special funds, and develop the nine Buddhist inscriptions as international-level heritage sites.
