Thousands of passengers stranded by massive IndiGo flight cancellations are rushing to nearby railway stations across India. Airfares on other airlines are soaring, pushing many to choose trains instead. Responding swiftly, Indian Railways increased capacity by adding 116 extra AC coaches to 37 trains as of 7 p.m. on December 5, 2025. Most additions came in Southern Railway, Northern Railway, and Western Railway zones. These extra coaches include two-tier, three-tier, and chair car AC classes. A Southern Railway official said, "More coaches would be added to trains heading to other destinations soon and the temporary arrangements would continue till the issue of flight cancellations was resolved." Passengers can get tickets for these extra coaches on a first-come, first-serve basis as the reservations are not yet in the computerized system. Following instructions from the Railway Board, zones are exploring special trains to popular cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Howrah. The official explained, "The capacity of existing trains is 24 coaches. We can add one or two more but the rake will go beyond the length of the platforms making it difficult for passengers to entrain/detrain." Southern Railway alone added coaches to 16 express trains, operating until December 11. Indian Railways is actively working to ease travel for passengers caught in the air travel disruption.
