Deadly Border Fighting Erupts Between Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban
December 6, 2025
Deadly fighting erupted overnight between Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban forces along their shared 1,600-mile border. Both sides accused each other of breaking a fragile ceasefire. Residents fled the Afghan border city of Spin Boldak to escape the violence.
A medical source in nearby Kandahar told BBC Pashto that four bodies were received at a local hospital. Pakistan reported three injuries.
The two sides confirmed exchanging fire for about four hours. Mosharraf Zaidi, spokesperson for Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, called it "unprovoked firing" by the Taliban. He added, "An immediate, befitting & intense response has been given by our armed forces. Pakistan remains fully alert & committed to ensuring its territorial integrity & the safety our citizens."
The Taliban spokesperson said Pakistan "once again initiated attacks" and said they were forced to respond.
Footage showed many Afghans fleeing the area on foot and vehicles. People in nearby towns also left fearing the spread of violence.
The clashes came less than two months after both sides agreed to a ceasefire in talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey. It had ended the worst fighting since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, but tensions have remained high.
Pakistan accuses the Taliban of sheltering armed groups that attack Pakistani targets. The Taliban denies this and says Pakistan blames others for its "own security failures."
Last week, delegations met in Saudi Arabia for a fourth round of peace talks but did not reach a deal. Sources said both sides agreed to continue the ceasefire despite the overnight clashes.
