Hundreds of job seekers in Karnataka will join a silent foot march in Dharwad on December 8. They demand urgent action to fill many vacant government jobs. The protest is organized by the All Karnataka Students’ Association. This group had protested in September over the same issue. Kanthakumar, the association president, told reporters on December 5, "After the September protest, the government relaxed the age limit for some jobs, but other demands remain unmet. We are forced to protest again on December 8 and plan another demonstration at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi on December 11." Thousands of unemployed young people from rural areas have spent money on coaching for exams. But jobs have not been filled due to delays that stretch over two years. The government blames internal reservation rules for the hold-up. The association wants five Indira Canteens set up in Dharwad where coaching happens. They also want the age limit for police constable jobs to stay raised — 33 years for SC, ST, OBC, and 30 years for the general category. Kanthakumar said, "Recruitments for posts like PSTR, GPSTR, HSTR, physical education teachers, PU lecturers, and assistant lecturers must start immediately. Because of confusion in the KAS exam by KPSC, the government should hold a re-exam." The group asks for transparency in all delayed government job hiring. Kanthakumar warned, "If the government ignores our demands, we will intensify our protests."
