The Government Polytechnic for Women in Nellore is over 40 years old and is now unsafe. About 180 students live and study there. Walls and ceilings have cracks, floors are damaged, doors and windows are broken, and furniture is weak. Toilets are unhygienic. Electrical fittings do not work properly, and roofs leak during rain. Safe drinking water is not available on the campus. S. Venkateswarulu, a parent, said, “The sorry state of affairs is raising questions about the safety of the inmates of the women’s hostel. The situation is affecting the academic performance and mental well-being of the students.” He has written letters to district and state officials but got no response. Last month, he wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and recently received a call from the Chief Minister’s Office about his concerns. Principal Yesu Das told The Hindu, “After receiving several complaints from the parents about the dilapidated condition of the building, the District Collector has sent a memo to take the necessary action. I have submitted a representation to the Director of Technical Education.” The Principal has asked authorities to approve Rs 9.40 crore to build the new C-Block as estimated by the Andhra Pradesh Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation. But G. Ganesh Kumar, Director of Technical Education, said, “The budget estimate for 2025-26 under the State plan is Rs 15 crore. However, commitments as of April 2025 stand at Rs 60.79 crore. The Skill Development and Training Department already asked for Rs 45.79 crore more. So, there is no money left for new sanctions.” The building remains unsafe, with hopes pinned on future funding and action.
