On December 2018, Justice Srinivasan Muralidhar led a Delhi High Court Bench that convicted Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for the murder of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurudwara during the 1984 riots. His judgment described these as crimes against humanity, highlighting how political backing often protects mass crime perpetrators. Years later, in 2025, Justice Muralidhar was appointed Chair of a UN Human Rights Commission to investigate alleged violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Israel and East Jerusalem. The Commission will probe abuses linked to recent conflicts, including nearly 70,000 Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli forces in two years. Known as 'Murali' to friends, he began as a lawyer in Chennai in the 1980s and took up human rights cases like the Bhopal gas tragedy and the Narmada dam displacement. As a Delhi High Court judge, he was praised for progressive rulings such as decriminalizing homosexuality in 2009 with Justice A.P. Shah and convicting 16 PAC personnel for the custodial killing of 38 Muslims in the Hashimpura massacre of 1987. Despite facing political pushback and a blocked Supreme Court appointment, Justice Muralidhar retired as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court in 2023, leaving behind a strong legacy for upholding law and human rights. Now, he carries that legacy to the global stage to investigate human rights amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
