23 Dead in Goa Nightclub Fire After Gas Cylinder Blast at Birch by Romeo Lane

At least 23 people have died in a fire at a popular nightclub in Goa, India, officials said. The blaze started around midnight on Saturday at Birch by Romeo Lane club in Arpora, North Goa. Most victims were staff working in the kitchen where a gas cylinder exploded, police said. Tourists were also among those killed.
Goa's Director General of Police, Shri Alok Kumar, said, "The fire was mainly concentrated around the kitchen area on the ground floor." He added that "most of the bodies were found around the kitchen suggesting that the victims were employed at the club."
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called it "a very painful day for all of us in Goa." He said three people died from burns while others died from suffocation. "Three to four tourists had died," he said, though their ages and nationalities are not yet known.
An investigation has begun, with authorities promising strong action against anyone found negligent. Dr Sawant stated, "Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law – any negligence will be dealt with firmly."
Goa, known for its vibrant nightlife and beaches, sees millions of tourists every year. Rescue efforts continued into early Sunday morning as officials worked at the site of the tragedy.
