Tezpur University Shuts Down as Protesters Demand Removal of V-C Shambhu Nath Singh
December 7, 2025
Tezpur University has been shut down by students, teachers, and staff after 79 days of protests against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh. The protests began over charges of corruption and irregularities. On December 6-7, a top Ministry of Education team got trapped at the campus gate for over three hours during talks with protesters. They left only after writing a hand-written assurance. The note said V-C Singh "will not administer the central varsity till a strict and time-bound inquiry against him is completed." The protest group, Tezpur University United Forum (TUUF), called the assurance preliminary and said the shutdown will continue until formal action and official notification from the Centre are received. All university activities, including exams, are halted since November 29. The registrar confirmed senior faculty member Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya will act as interim V-C. Ministerial team leader Vineet Joshi said the government is processing information and will act in the university's best interest. TUUF and university staff associations fully back the agitation. The campus tension began in mid-September after students accused the V-C of disrespecting cultural icon Zubeen Garg during state mourning. Singh has stayed away from campus since a heated confrontation on September 22. Meanwhile, women protesters blocked police from entering to rescue the Ministry team. The Ministry had earlier conducted two fact-finding inquiries. Protesters vow no cooperation until the V-C is formally removed.
