Five Lakh Devotees Chant Bhagavad Gita in Kolkata’s Massive Spiritual Event
December 7, 2025
Thousands of devotees, including sadhus and sadhvis from West Bengal and nearby states, gathered at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on December 7, 2025. They came to take part in a grand Bhagavad Gita recital called 'Panch Lakkho Konthe Gita Path,' meaning chanting by five lakh voices. The event is organized by Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, a group of monks and spiritual leaders from various monasteries and Hindu institutions. Early in the morning, participants carrying copies of the Gita arrived waving saffron flags. Cultural shows started setting an energetic, spiritual mood. A sadhvi shared, "Ahead of the chanting, the energy here is overwhelming. We all read Gita at home, but reciting it along with five lakh people is an experience of awakening -- a prayer for the world’s peace and prosperity." The spiritual lead of the event is Swami Gyananandaji Maharaj from the Geeta Manishi Mahamandal. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and other famous monks were special guests. The event aims to highlight West Bengal’s rich spiritual heritage and promote social harmony. West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, who returned early from Delhi, attended and will give a speech. According to a Lok Bhavan official, "The Governor received an invitation from the organisers and he will be attending the programme today... He cut short his trip to the national capital and returned to Kolkata late last night." The organisers also invited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Security has been tightened due to the large crowd.
