Shashi Tharoor Warns India: Don't Get Complacent on China, Keep Talking and Stay Alert!
August 22, 2025
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sounded a strong warning on Friday: India must not get complacent when dealing with China. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in New Delhi, on the exciting theme “Navigating Multipolarity: India’s Role in a World of Flux,” Tharoor pointed out that China’s moves are no accident. “We can't be oblivious about China. That doesn't mean we shouldn't talk to China,” he said.
He gave eye-opening examples of China’s tactics, saying, “China withheld rare earth, Foxconn engineers — these are deliberate decisions.” Tharoor showed how Beijing is using economic tools as a powerful weapon to pressure New Delhi.
Turning the spotlight to India’s friendship with the United States, Tharoor shared his experience from a recent visit to Washington. Right after the heart-wrenching Pahalgam terror attack, he led a group of Indian MPs to explain India’s strict stance against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Remarkably, the US Vice President told the delegation, “We respect the restraint India has shown post Pahalgam terror attack.” This praise shows how India’s patience and measured reactions have earned respect on the global stage.
Tharoor made it clear that while China poses long-term challenges, India’s active partnership with the US strengthens its position worldwide. His message is a spicy mix of caution and confidence: India must stay sharp, keep talking to China, but never forget to stand firm!
