Supreme Court Lights Up Diwali: Green Crackers Allowed in Delhi-NCR from Oct 18 to 21

October 15, 2025

Bursting bad news? Not this time! The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave a green signal for green crackers sale and bursting in Delhi-NCR for Diwali. A special bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran accepted a joint request from the Centre and Delhi government to ease the ban. But hold your excitement – only burst those crackers from October 18 to 21, they said. Why this temporary truce? The Chief Justice explained, “Crackers are smuggled into Delhi-NCR and they cause more damage than green firecrackers.” So, the Court decided to take a middle road – allowing green crackers in moderation but caring for the environment. To make sure pollution doesn't go out of control, the Central Pollution Control Board and state pollution control boards will watch the air closely and file reports during the festival. Also, cracker makers will be under a new scanner: their batches must have QR codes uploaded online for transparency. No smuggled crackers allowed! Sellers caught with crackers from outside Delhi-NCR risk losing their licenses. Earlier, on October 10, the Supreme Court was still deciding on pleas for green firecracker permissions. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had pushed for bursting green firecrackers on festive days like Diwali, Guru Purab, and Christmas without timing limits. So, this Diwali, Delhi-NCR gets to celebrate with a spark – legally and safely! But remember, it’s all about balance: joy with responsibility, light with love for our planet.
