ICAR Urges All Agriculture Universities to Launch Natural Farming Courses and Research
December 7, 2025
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director General M.L. Jat has urged all State and Central agriculture universities and universities with agriculture departments to start courses and research programmes in natural farming.
In his letter, Dr. Jat said natural farming is now a topic of national importance, supporting India’s goals of sustainable agriculture, protecting the environment, and helping farmers. He mentioned that a new B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture – Natural Farming course has been developed following the Sixth Deans’ Committee recommendations and National Education Policy 2020. This course has been approved and shared with all agricultural universities. "Some universities have successfully initiated this programme from the academic year 2023-24, marking a transformative milestone in agricultural higher education. I hope, remaining universities will introduce this course by next academic year," he said.
Dr. Jat also stressed the need to strengthen postgraduate education and research in natural farming. He said growing demand for chemical-free food, healthy soil, and low-emission farming means universities should build strong M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in natural farming and related fields. He promised ICAR’s full academic and technical support for curriculum development and resource materials.
"The collective efforts of our Agricultural Universities will play a pivotal role in preparing a new generation of scientists, extension professionals and entrepreneurs who can lead India’s transition towards ecologically harmonious and economically viable farming systems," Dr. Jat stated.
This initiative marks an important push for education aligned with India’s sustainable agriculture vision.
