A Thane court has acquitted 10 people accused in a 19-year-old case of rioting and trying to murder police during a protest. The judge said the prosecution gave vague and weak evidence. Additional Sessions Judge P. R. Ashturkar ruled on December 1 that the charges could not be proved beyond doubt. The protest happened on November 30, 2006, in Ulhasnagar, Thane district, after an incident in Kanpur, UP. Police said a large crowd gathered and some caused damage and attacked police. Four accused died during the trial, so the case against them was dropped. The judge said, "There is no evidence of any independent witness. As no identification parade was conducted, there is absolutely nothing on record as to how the present accused were identified, that too from the mob of 2000 to 2500 persons." Two main witnesses also retracted their statements and did not support the case. Those acquitted include an autorickshaw driver, two singers, businessmen, labourers, a painter, a tailor, and a company worker. The order was made public on December 8, 2025.
