Chennai's Kalikambal Temple Rajagopuram Raised 3 Feet to Avoid Flooding
December 8, 2025
To stop flooding at Sri Kalikambal Temple in Mannady, Chennai, workers started lifting the five-tier Rajagopuram by three feet on December 7, 2025. The temple is 1.5 feet lower than the street. Lifting the structure will raise the temple's first step above the road level, preventing water from flowing inside. Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekarbabu said this would protect the 500-ton granite structure from water damage and extend its life. The work is part of a ₹2.33 crore renovation, including waterproofing, shrine repairs, and floor relaying. The main gopuram's connected mandapam will be dismantled before lifting. Surender Kumar from Mamchand House Lifting Company said no cement mortar will be used; instead, traditional materials like red brick, lime, jaggery, and kadukkai powder will keep the heritage look. The gopuram lifting will take about two months and cost ₹40 lakh. The restoration aims to finish before Kumbabhishekam in March 2026. Around 25 temples in Tamil Nadu, including Vyasarpadi's Raviswarar Temple, have had similar work done to stop floods.
