On December 8, 2025, the Election Commission of India (ECI) appointed five senior IAS officers as Special Roll Observers (SRO) in West Bengal. These officers will monitor the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across various divisions. Kumar Ravi Kant Singh, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, is assigned to the Presidency division. Niraj Kumar Bansod of the Ministry of Home Affairs will serve in the Medinipur division. Krishna Kumar Nirala from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is appointed for Burdwan division. Alok Tiwari, Joint Secretary at the Department of Economic Affairs, will oversee Malda division. Pankaj Yadav, Joint Secretary of the Department of Rural Development, will monitor Jalpaiguri division. Earlier, retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta was named Special Roll Observer and a team of 12 IAS officers were appointed as Electoral Roll Observers to assist District and Electoral Registration Officers. An official from the Chief Electoral Officer's office said, "The appointment of SROs ensures enhanced scrutiny and transparency in the SIR process across all divisions. Their presence will strengthen monitoring and compliance with EC norms." The observers will supervise electoral roll activities and ensure adherence to Election Commission guidelines in their areas, the official added. The Special Intensive Revision began on November 4 with form distribution ongoing until December 11. The draft electoral rolls will be published on December 16. The final voters' list will be issued on February 14, 2026.
