Tamil Nadu Forms Expert Panel to Draft SOP for Elephant Translocation After Fatalities
December 8, 2025
The Tamil Nadu government has formed a high-level expert committee to develop a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for capturing, moving, releasing, and monitoring wild elephants and other wildlife. This follows concerns over the deaths of two elephants recently translocated. The government said translocation is done only to reduce conflicts or protect people.
The deaths are still being investigated but led to a fresh review of current methods. The new State-level committee includes top Forest Department officers, wildlife vets, and academic experts. Key members are A. Udhayan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and AIWC Director, as Chairperson; Anurag Mishra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests; N. Vengatesh Prabhu, District Forest Officer, Gudalur; forest veterinary officers K. Kalaivanan and Rajesh; and professor N. Baskaran from A.V.C. College.
They can add more experts like behavioural ecologists and GIS specialists if needed. Their task is to review the recent elephant deaths, check current protocols against national and international scientific standards, and find ways to improve them. They will also prepare a detailed SOP to guide elephant translocation in Tamil Nadu, with hopes it can become a national model.
The government has given the committee two months to submit their report and the draft SOP.
