Kochi Local Polls: LDF, UDF, NDA Battle Hard for Control
December 8, 2025
Kochi's local body elections are on the horizon, sparking a fierce contest among the Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The LDF aims to retain power with a stronger mandate. The UDF is confident of a historic comeback. Meanwhile, the NDA targets increasing its seat count to double digits.
In 2020, after 10 years of UDF rule, the LDF became the largest group in the 74-seat corporation but lacked a simple majority. LDF won 34 seats, UDF 31, BJP 5, and independents 5. Voter turnout then was 62.04%.
LDF's general convener M. Anilkumar claimed, "We ran a completely positive campaign based on a development agenda," while accusing UDF of negative tactics and rebel candidates in 19 divisions. He added, "The UDF is facing rebels in at least 19 divisions, and the unholy nexus with the BJP will repel even its traditional supporters."
Anilkumar said LDF got a head start by distributing leaflets highlighting their achievements before the election was announced. He also charged the UDF with spreading an AI-generated defamatory video against the Chief Minister.
District Congress Committee president Muhammed Shiyas fought back, calling the last five years "lost years" marked by “corruption, anti-development outlook, and mismanagement." Shiyas criticized spending on biomining and fire control at Brahmapuram, saying the compressed biogas plant was a CSR initiative, not government funded. He dismissed UDF rebel challenges as limited and expressed confidence, "We will wrest back power with a historic mandate."
BJP’s Kochi city district president K.S. Shaiju predicted doubling their seats, highlighting voters’ desire for development. He noted BJP took back two seats earlier allotted to its ally Bharath Dharma Jana Sena for winnability. The NDA fields no candidates in four divisions but focuses on strongholds like Edappally and Kochi Central. Shaiju said, "We have carried out a campaign in divisions where we have an advantage to ensure we cash in."
The battle for Kochi's Corporation is set to be a tight, vibrant race involving sharp claims and promises from all fronts.
