Kerala High Court Reserves Verdict on Haal Film Certification Dispute
December 8, 2025
The Kerala High Court’s Division Bench on Monday reserved its verdict on appeals against a single judge's order that canceled the A certificate given to the Malayalam film Haal by the CBFC. The Board, the Centre, and the Catholic Congress had filed appeals. The Catholic Congress claimed the film showed forceful religious conversion and misrepresented inter-faith relationships. It said the film wrongly portrayed the Thamarassery bishop as supporting such marriages, which is against his known views. The Congress described this as defamatory, hurting religious feelings and risking public peace. It also objected to filming the Bishop's House without permission. Earlier, the CBFC’s revision committee asked for removing about six scenes, including one showing beef biriyani and another depicting the police negatively. The film was planned for release on September 12. Both the Single Bench and Division Bench watched the film after many petitions, including one by the filmmakers, were filed in the High Court.
