Tensions exploded between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border, ending a ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump. Since Monday, at least three Thai soldiers and seven Cambodian civilians have died. Both sides blame each other for starting the violence. Thailand launched airstrikes in the border area amid the clashes, the worst since a July ceasefire. The original July fighting killed at least 48 people and displaced thousands before Trump intervened to negotiate a peace deal in October. Thailand calls the deal the “Joint Declaration by the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia on the outcomes of their meeting in Kuala Lumpur,” while Trump named it the “Kuala Lumpur peace accord.” Two weeks after the deal, Thailand paused the agreement, and fighting resumed in December. The conflict traces back over 100 years to colonial border decisions. Tensions rose sharply in 2008 when Cambodia tried to list an 11th-century temple in the disputed region as a Unesco World Heritage Site, angering Thailand. May 2023 saw escalations after a Cambodian soldier’s death. Each side claims different stories on the recent attacks. Thailand says it retaliated after Cambodian fire killed a Thai soldier. Cambodia accuses Thailand of firing first and insists it did not retaliate. Thailand reported Cambodia used rockets and drones against its troops, hitting civilian zones. Cambodia says Thailand fired indiscriminately into its border communities. Both countries had previously strengthened military presence and imposed trade restrictions. Despite Trump's call for peace, Thailand's foreign minister said the ceasefire is "not working" and placed responsibility on Cambodia. Former Cambodian PM Hun Sen said his country only returned fire in respect for the ceasefire. The October deal called for heavy weapons withdrawal and observer teams, plus releasing detained soldiers. Travel advisories warn against non-essential travel within 50km of the border in both countries. With no strong leadership to end the confrontation, the situation remains tense and uncertain.
