Hazrath Khadar Vali Baba’s Dargah Prepares for Grand Urusu Mahotsavam in Vizianagaram
December 10, 2025
The Hazrath Khadar Vali Baba dargah in Babametta, Vizianagaram, is gearing up for its annual Urusu Mahotsavam. The event will take place on January 29, 30, and 31, 2026. More than 35,000 devotees from all religions will visit during these three days.
The dargah’s trust board has started holding meetings to prepare for the festival. The dargah has been serving people for many decades. Its biggest service is providing free meals daily to the needy, underprivileged sportspersons, and patients with their attendants. The dargah runs a 24-hour langar kitchen where anyone can get food anytime.
Khaleelulla Shareef, the trustee of the dargah and also known as Khaleel Babu, said, "The trust has never held a donation drive for its service and activities. It receives constant and timely support from philanthropists." Many politicians, IAS officers, businesspersons, and long-time devotees help and volunteer at the dargah, especially during the Urusu Utsavam.
Hazrath Khadar Vali Baba, originally from Tamil Nadu, was a devoted Sufi from childhood. Inspired by Tajuddin Baba of Nagpur, he began spiritual and service work near Vizianagaram in 1924. His influence attracted many kings and British officials. He blessed numerous devotees at his darbar. After he passed away in 1961, his followers built a dargah nearby. Today, the darbar area serves as a community kitchen providing food to the needy.
Athavulla Shareef Shah Khadari, a close follower of Baba, helped develop the dargah until 2021. Now, his son Khaleel Babu continues this legacy with help from devotees, volunteers, and family. Khaleel’s wife, Azizunnissa, prepares food, and his sons Ahmadulla and Khadar Fareed assist in running the dargah smoothly.
Mr. Khaleel Babu, who has received several awards, said, "Sufism strongly advocates humanity which ensures inner peace for everyone. The visitors to the dargah get inspired by the principles and ideals of Hazrath Khadar Vali Baba and have initiated their own charitable activities in their respective areas."
