Mexico's Senate has approved new tariffs that will charge up to 50% on more than 1,400 products from countries without free trade deals with Mexico. These include metal, cars, clothes, and appliances mostly from China, Thailand, India, and Indonesia. President Claudia Sheinbaum said these tariffs are needed to boost Mexico's local production. The measures come as Mexico negotiates with the US over steep import taxes threatened by President Donald Trump. Trump has warned of 50% tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminium and a 5% tariff on Mexico over water-sharing disputes with US farmers. The US is Mexico's largest trading partner, while China has warned Mexico to "think carefully" before imposing these tariffs. The new levies will start on January 1, 2026, affecting trade significantly.
