Etihad Cancels Abu Dhabi-Lisbon Flights Due to Portugal's General Strike on Dec 11
December 11, 2025
Etihad Airways cancelled its Abu Dhabi to Lisbon flight EY099 and the return flight EY100 scheduled on Thursday, 11 December 2025. This happened because a major strike across Portugal shut down normal airport operations. The airline apologised and asked passengers to update contact info and use help channels for rebooking.
A nationwide strike disrupted air travel in Portugal, including Lisbon Portela International Airport. This was the country's biggest walkout since 2013. As a result, both Etihad and Emirates cancelled flights to and from Lisbon.
Etihad stopped its daily Abu Dhabi-Lisbon service (EY099 outbound and EY100 return). Emirates cancelled four Lisbon flights: EK191 and EK193 from Dubai to Lisbon, and EK192 and EK194 returning.
The strike came during December’s holiday rush. Dubai International Airport expected over 10 million passengers. Emirates stated that travelers booked on the cancelled outbound flights won’t be allowed to travel from their origin.
Portugal's strike was called by main unions CGTP and UGT. It targeted proposed labour reforms. Workers involved included teachers, health staff, municipal employees, and crucially airline cabin and ground crews represented by SNPVAC. Union actions at Lisbon and Porto airports limited services to minimum, forcing flight cancellations.
Etihad said the strike affected all airlines at Lisbon Airport. They emphasised, "the safety and comfort of our guests and crew is our number one priority." They apologised for the inconvenience and said teams are working to assist passengers.
Thousands of travelers faced disruption during peak travel season. Airlines including Emirates offered rebooking, refunds, or vouchers based on fare rules and availability. Passengers are advised to check etihad.com/contactme and contact their airlines for updates.
