At least 34 people have died and many more injured after Myanmar’s military launched air strikes on a hospital in Mrauk-U town, Rakhine state, on Wednesday night. The hospital lies within territory controlled by the Arakan Army, one of the strongest ethnic forces fighting the military regime. "This is the latest vicious attack by the terrorist military targeting civilian places," said Khaing Thukha, spokesperson for the Arakan Army. He added the military "must take responsibility" for bombing civilians. The attack hit at around 9 PM local time, killing 10 patients on the spot. Photos on social media show damaged roofs and hospital debris. Myanmar has seen thousands killed and millions displaced since the military coup in 2021 sparked a civil war. The military has stepped up air strikes recently, using paragliders to drop bombs. While the junta has not commented on this strike, pro-military sources claim civilians were not targeted. The conflict continues as Myanmar prepares for elections on December 28, which critics say are neither free nor fair. United Nations human rights expert Tom Andrews called it a "sham election." Ethnic armies and opposition groups have vowed to boycott the polls. The junta has arrested civilians accused of disrupting the vote, including activists and at least one election candidate. The military’s intensified attacks come amid growing unrest and a crackdown on dissent.
