Injured Tiger MDT-37 Captured After Fatal Attack at Mudumalai Reserve
December 11, 2025
An old male tiger called MDT-37 was caught by Forest officials on Thursday, December 11, 2025, in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve's buffer zone. The tiger is believed to have killed B. Nagi, an Adivasi woman and shepherd, on November 24 while she was herding goats in Mavanallah.
To find the tiger, the Forest department set up 29 camera traps and used thermal drones. Images showed MDT-37 had injuries to its face and had lost molar teeth from old age, making it hard for the tiger to hunt wild animals.
Mr. R. Kiruba Shankar, Field Director of MTR, said, "We think that the tiger is at least 15 years old and has been unable to hunt, causing it to prey on cattle." Four teams worked together to track the tiger. They placed four cages baited with live animals to capture it.
On Thursday morning, MDT-37 was trapped in one of the cages in Chemmanatham. The tiger was caught humanely without sedation. After a vet check, the tiger will be moved to Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai, as it cannot be released back into the wild due to its injuries and age.
This move aims to prevent further attacks and provide proper care for the aging tiger.
