Karnataka’s Music University Shifts Admin Block to New Campus in Mysuru
December 11, 2025
The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University in Mysuru is about to complete a big move. On December 15, 2025, the university’s administrative wing will shift from its old campus in Lakshmipuram to a new, fully unified campus at Sardar Vallabhbhai Nagar.
This means that for the first time since it started in 2008-09, all administration and music classes will be at the same place. Music classes have already been happening at the new campus since July 2025. The Vice-Chancellor, Nagesh Bettakote, called it a "16-year-long wait for a full-fledged infrastructure and campus of its own."
The new six-acre campus is along the Outer Ring Road near Chamundi Hills. It has eight ‘kutiras’ for practical training and four high-tech classrooms with digital boards designed for seminars and theory lessons. The administration block cost ₹4.95 crore, while classrooms and kutira complexes cost ₹4.85 crore. This whole project was funded internally over the last two years.
All undergraduate and postgraduate classes now run at the new site. However, the old campus will still be used for state-level exams and evening certificate courses. The university currently serves 659 students, including 123 DLitt, 46 PhD, 121 master’s, and 34 undergraduate students.
Bettakote said the new campus offers the "ideal atmosphere for learning music and classical art forms." He acknowledged some students first complained about the distance but felt the benefits outweigh the issues.
The old campus was a repurposed primary school building and an ad hoc setup. Its lack of a full campus blocked eligibility for UGC grants. With this new infrastructure, the university hopes to secure more funds for growth and expansion.
