December 11, 2025
Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, home to the world's largest collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings, plans to open a new outpost in Eindhoven. The museum announced on Thursday that it will build a 3,500 square metre centre near Eindhoven’s central railway station over the next six to eight years. The location will be in parkland by the River Dommel and is supported by the Eindhoven city council and ASML, a local semiconductor machinery maker.Said Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum: “The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven represents an important step in making the collection even more accessible in the south of the country.” The museum holds over 1 million objects but shows only a fraction. Its famous works include Vermeer’s pictures and Rembrandt’s The Night Watch.Last year, the Rijksmuseum attracted nearly 2.5 million visitors in Amsterdam, causing overtourism concerns. Eindhoven is a two-and-a-half-hour drive south of Amsterdam and is the Netherlands’ fifth largest city. It is known as a tech hub and home to the Philips electronics company.Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Eindhoven’s mayor and former Dutch finance minister, said: “The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven will be a valuable addition to the cultural landscape of Brabant and beyond. This museum is set to become a place where everyone can enjoy a unique blend of history and creativity.”The Rijksmuseum follows other European museums opening outposts, such as the Louvre in Lens and Abu Dhabi, and London’s V&A museum which will open a branch in the Olympic park this April.
