Kozhikode local body polls see 77.24% voting turnout in second phase

Kozhikode district reported a voter turnout of 77.24% as the second phase of the local body polls concluded on Thursday. Official data shows that 20,72,137 of 26,82,682 registered voters cast their votes. Among them were 9,52,063 men, 11,20,065 women, and nine transgender voters.
The Kozhikode Corporation recorded a polling rate of 69.55%. Ramanattukara municipality led with the highest turnout of 81.39%, while Payyoli municipality had the lowest at 76.53%. Other municipalities reported: Koyilandy 77.8%, Vadakara 77.27%, Feroke 77.08%, Koduvally 77.11%, and Mukkom 79.29%.
Kozhikode district panchayat saw a 79.06% turnout. Among block panchayats, Perambra registered the highest percentage at 81.46%. Polling was held across 91 local bodies — including Kozhikode Corporation, seven municipalities, 70 grama panchayats, 12 block panchayats, and the district panchayat — at 3,097 polling stations.
In comparison, the voter turnout in Kozhikode was 79.2% in 2020, 77.64% in 2015, and 77.07% in 2010. Polling started briskly at 7 a.m. with 4.26% of voters casting ballots within the first hour. Minor technical glitches with electronic voting machines occurred in Thiruvambady and Karassery grama panchayats but were quickly resolved.
Turnout climbed to 40.92% by noon and reached 66.63% by 4 p.m. Despite early trends suggesting a higher turnout, the final figure stabilized.
Notable voters included Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, Forest and Wildlife Minister A.K. Saseendran, actor Joy Mathew, social critic M.N. Karassery, Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan, and District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh.
Vote counting will take place at 20 centers on Saturday. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by electronic voting machine ballots.
