On December 11, 2025, the Indian Parliament extended the tenure of the Joint Committee reviewing bills for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Committee Chairman P.P. Chaudhary moved a motion in the Lok Sabha to extend the committee's term until the first day of the last week of the 2026 Budget session. The motion was accepted by a voice vote. Since its formation last December, the committee has held discussions with constitutional experts, economists, and the Law Commission Chairman Dinesh Maheshwari. Senior Supreme Court lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal appeared before the committee on December 10 as an expert to clarify queries about the bills. Mr. Chaudhary told reporters on December 10, “The report will take time. We have to listen to many stakeholders. It should be done after listening to all stakeholders because it’s a very big election reform.” The committee’s work on these significant election reform bills will now continue through early 2026.
