Donald Trump announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew their ceasefire after days of deadly clashes threatened peace. He shared this in a Truth Social post following talks with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Trump said, “They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim.” The original ceasefire was brokered in July by Malaysia and pressured by Trump, who threatened to withhold trade benefits if both sides did not agree. The ceasefire was formalised further in October during a regional meeting in Malaysia attended by Trump. Despite this, tensions remained with ongoing propaganda and minor cross-border violence. The border conflict has deep roots from territorial claims based on a 1907 map created under French colonial rule, which Thailand disputes. A 1962 international court ruling awarded sovereignty to Cambodia, which remains a sore point for Thailand. Recently, Thailand has used jet fighters for airstrikes on military targets. Cambodia deployed BM-21 rocket launchers with a 30-40 km range. According to ThaiPBS, six Thai soldiers were killed by rocket shrapnel. The Thai army said some homes near the border were damaged by Cambodian rocket fire. Thailand also destroyed a crane on a hill near the ancient Preah Vihear temple, claiming it was used for enemy command and control with electronic and optical devices.
