2,400 Tamil Nadu Contract Staff Demand Permanent Jobs; TANSACS Denies Provision
December 13, 2025
The Tamil Nadu AIDS Control All Employees Welfare Association was told there is no way to make contractual staff permanent at the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS). The association president, M. Jayanthi, said 2,400 workers including counsellors, technicians, pharmacists, nurses, and coordinators have worked here for about 20 years without benefits like pension or medical cover. She recalled that past political leaders promised regularisation, but nothing happened. In reply to protest calls, the TANSACS Project Director stated in a letter that the society works under the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) will end its fifth phase in March 2026. Per NACO guidelines, workers are hired on contracts for fixed periods with consolidated salaries. There is no option to make them permanent or give government benefits. Contracts are renewed yearly only for the programme duration. The letter explained that NACO has not created any permanent jobs in this programme. Ms. Jayanthi said the association will keep protesting until permanent jobs are granted.
