Violence erupted on December 13, 2025, at football legend Lionel Messi’s event in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. The event turned chaotic, prompting heavy criticism from opposition leaders and the Governor of West Bengal. Governor C.V. Ananda Bose said on X, "While the organisers of the event are to be blamed squarely for the situation that unfolded, it is also the police that has failed the Government, the people and the Chief Minister who is also the Home Minister." He called the incident a “black day” for Kolkata’s sports lovers. BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, MP Sukanta Majumdar, and senior spokesperson Amit Malviya, blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the state police for poor crowd management. Adhikari shared photos of TMC ministers Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose with Messi, questioning why they were allowed close access while fans paid high ticket prices. He claimed the event became "Sports Minister Aroop Biswas and Sujit Basu’s business" and said fans were “fleeced for thousands of rupees.” Majumdar called the TMC’s conduct “unruly and barbaric” and accused them of hijacking the event. The BJP demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of Ministers Biswas and Bose. Governor Bose and opposition leaders also called for the arrest of event organiser Shatadru Dutta and a full ticket refund. Dutta was detained by police that afternoon. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh distanced the government from the chaos, saying, "This is entirely the result of the organisers’ gross mismanagement, who are a private entity. It has no connection to the state government. This has no relation to the TMC." He said Minister Biswas participated only as Sports Minister, not personally. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologized to Messi and sports fans for the chaos and ordered a probe into the event’s mishandling. The situation puts the spotlight on event security and political accountability at what should have been a grand sports celebration.
