A safety drill for a possible radiation leak at the Kaiga atomic power station was successfully held in villages near the plant in Uttara Kannada district. On December 11 at 6:30 a.m., the district administration received an emergency alert from Kaiga’s Site Emergency Director. Two radiation impact zones were created: L zone (Hartuga, Goole, Nagekove) and M zone (Kuchegar, Shirve, Keravadi, Devalamukki). Following the alert, the District Disaster Management Authority chairperson and Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmipriya held an emergency meeting at 6:45 a.m. Officials were ordered to take immediate action. Villages were barricaded, alerts were sounded, and schools and colleges were closed for the day. Public was advised not to believe social media rumors. Transport officials arranged buses to move people to rehabilitation centers. Health check-ups were conducted for affected residents. Residents, animals, and vehicles leaving the zones were decontaminated. Waste and equipment from decontamination were safely disposed of. At 2:10 p.m., the district administration announced the radiation leak was contained. A press release was issued to inform the public and confirm the emergency drill was completed successfully.
