Satadru Dutta, the organiser of the Lionel Messi event in Kolkata, was produced before a court on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The court sent him to 14 days of police custody. Dutta was arrested the previous day by Bidhannagar City Police. The arrest came hours after football fans vandalised Salt Lake Stadium. The unrest followed shortly after Lionel Messi left the venue. Fans were angry because, despite buying expensive tickets, they could not see Messi clearly as organisers surrounded him. When Dutta was shown in court, locals shouted slogans calling him a “thief.” West Bengal government set up an enquiry committee to investigate the vandalism. The committee includes Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, and is chaired by retired Justice Asim Kumar Roy. They visited Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday and held a meeting afterwards. West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose also visited the stadium. He had tried to enter on Saturday but was not allowed. Speaking to reporters, Dr. Bose called the Saturday events an “eye opener for everyone.” He said, “I will also be submitting my report to the Government of India.” Dr. Bose added he was not invited to the event by the organisers. In a press conference on Sunday, Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded the suspension and arrest of State Sports Minister Aroop Biswas and Fire Minister Sujit Bose. He criticised the FIR filed against the vandalism, alleging it shields key individuals. Mr. Adhikari said, “This FIR has been lodged to save Ministers and others within the Trinamool.” He also asked that the investigation be taken out of the State police's hands. The chaos during the Messi event at Salt Lake Stadium has triggered strong political reactions and a formal inquiry into what went wrong during the much-awaited visit.
